POWERS J. B. AND S. S. WlNANS. Sexual behavior in peripherally anosmic male hamsters. PHYSIOL. BEHAV 10(2) 361 368, 1973.-Sexually experienced and inexperienced male hamsters mated normally after they had been rendered temporarily anosmic by intranasal zinc sulfate treatment (Experiment 1), in contrast to the complete absence of sexual behavior following removal of the olfactory bulbs. The efficacy of our zinc sulfate technique was demonstrated by use ot an olfactory discrimination training procedure. Hamsters lost the ability to smell both amyl acetate (Experiment 2) and the female hamster post-estrus vaginal discharge (Experiment 3) following zinc sulfate induced anosmia but at the same time retained normal sexual behavior.

Olfactory contribution to Fos expression during mating in inexperienced male hamsters.

Male hamsters are very dependent on chemosensory cues for normal mating behavior. We have previously reported that central, vomeronasal pathways are intensely and selectively activated during mating or pheromonal stimulation. The contribution of main olfactory sensory input to the patterns of c-fos activation was investigated in this study. Sexually inexperienced male hamsters were either made ...

Male Syrian hamsters demonstrate a conditioned place preference for sexual behavior and female chemosensory stimuli.

Sexual behavior is a natural reward for many rodent species, and it often includes chemosensory-directed components. Chemosensory stimuli themselves may also be rewarding. Conditioned place preference (CPP) is one paradigm frequently used to test the rewarding properties of a range of stimuli. Males and females of several rodent species show a CPP for sexual behavior; however, it is currently u...

Facilitation of Male Sexual Behavior in Syrian Hamsters by the Combined Action of Dihydrotestosterone and Testosterone

BACKGROUND Testosterone (T) controls male Syrian hamster sexual behavior, however, neither of T's primary metabolites, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol (E(2)), even in highly supraphysiological doses, fully restores sexual behavior in castrated hamsters. DHT and T apparently interact with androgen receptors differentially to control male sexual behavior (MSB), but whether these two hormo...

Organization of mating behavior in male hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Factor analysis was applied to standard measures of sexual behavior in 73 male hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) as they interacted with hormone-primed females. The results suggest that 5 factors, or conceptual mechanisms, function in the organization of the behaviors observed in the first 2 copulatory series. Of these, the 3 that relate to the behaviors in the first copulatory series were compar...

Long-term persistence of male copulatory behavior in castrated and photo-inhibited Siberian hamsters.

Gonadal steroids are essential for the long-term maintenance of the full repertoire of sexual behavior in male rodents. Typically, all individuals of several species cease to display the ejaculatory reflex within a few weeks of castration. The present study documents the persistence of the ejaculatory reflex 19 weeks after orchidectomy in 40% of male Siberian hamsters maintained in long or shor...
